MUST-HAVE

iPad

Cannot live without! More and more of my rehearsal blocking lives right on the iPad. My favorite setup includes my Apple Pencil, this knock-off Apple Keyboard, and this indestructible case.

MUST-HAVE

Rehearsal Light

It's got to have both a clip-on and an optional USB plug. I'm obsessed with this particular one because it also changes tone and has a dimmer switch!

MUST-HAVE

First Aid Kit

Uber critical to keep safety first during rehearsals. We always have a first aid kit within arms reach during rehearsal.

Clear-View Highlighters

Another key product in my rehearsal arsenal - clear-view highlighters! Be mindful of where you leave them... seriously, people become obsessed and swipe them!

Smooth-Glide Mechanical Pencil

I'll admit: I'm really a pen person. But pencils are so important to have on hand, so why not have a pencil that feels like a pen? This one is my fav.

MUST-HAVE

Sticky Notes

If you see me without a stack of sticky notes...something is horribly wrong. I cannot live without a fresh sticky stack next to me at my rehearsal desk. The more colors the better.

Gaffer Power - Gaff Tape

I've tried every kind of gaff tape around and I can't stand the kind that leaves a residue on my stage. This is my tried and true gaff tape.

MULTI-USE

Durable Dividers

No more paper dividers. They tear and bend so easily! Plastic is the way to go. And these particular ones have lasted me 4+ years already and still look good as new!

D-Ring Binders

It's D-ring or bust when it comes to rehearsal binders. With the amount of paper that we still collect in rehearsals, plus the need to take paper in and out -- I refuse any other type of binder. Spoiled? Maybe. But trust me, you will never go back after you've tried it!

MUST-HAVE

Director's Idea Notebook

Some things just have to be written down to really capture. I always have a notebook handy to jot down ideas, inspiration, actor notes, and action items. This notebook goes with me everywhere. I'm a ruled line kind of person - but there is also a blank page for the drawers out there.

Page Protectors

Once rehearsal documents are set I put them in page protectors. Just makes it easier to fend off pencil smears and page tears when I have to hand them off to my SM or actors. Here's where the OCD sets in -- they must be fully clear (no white reinforced holes), no glare (those rehearsal lights will get you!), and heavy-duty.

MUST-HAVE

Tab Stickies

Something about color-coded stickies makes my organization-obsessed self get the tingles. You too, huh? Beyond sticky notes, I've got to have tab stickies to pre-mark the day's rehearsal pages for easy access.

The technology that makes it all possible

GMAIL & GOOGLE DRIVE

Gmail and Google Drive especially are at the heart of my productions. Keeping content digital, up-to-date, and accessible to the team and actors is critically important. The future of theatre production is totally digital planning, process, blocking, and collaboration. Google Drive is the secret behind it all.

CANVA

Productions are 80% marketing (seriously, 20% production and the rest is the promotion). Canva is the perfect tool to develop all things promo, social media, and design. From programs to Instagram posts, and website design to tickets I do it all on Canva.

WIX

Productions have to have a web presence, I've gotten in the habit of developing a website for each show and I use Wix to do it. It's super simple, easy to update, and makes my productions look polished and professional.

MAILCHIMP

Why rebuild an audience every show?! Collect their email addresses and promote upcoming shows via MailChimp. I love that MailChimp is free for the first 1000 emails!

NOTION

My current digital brain (yes, I have switched from Evernote!) I capture everything digitally in Notion from ideas to to-do lists and more.

LASTPASS

I would not function without Last Pass, it stores all my passwords, accounts, and automatically creates great passwords for me. No more tracking on my own, Last Pass keeps me sane.

Apps That Rock Rehearsals

Rehearsal Pro

A must-have to learn lines! I recommend it to all my actors to get off-book quickly, prep for auditions, rehearsal, and manage their script.

Slateable

Finally! Self-tape auditions and upload auditions easily. This has been key for 2020 and the future of self-tape auditions.

Stage Write

This app is everything - the best app to capture choreography, staging, and blocking for theatrical productions of all sizes.
